Damian
creates a slice of League history League history was created last Sunday when in the 7,681st match we have staged, Woodham Mortimer's wicketkeeper, Damian Fannon, became the first wicketkeeper to claim all six victims in an innings. He caught four and stumped two of the Shalford batsmen. Braintree Youth defeated but not knocked off the top What a strange day it was, not only some of the results, but in the fact that with one exception, it was not a high scoring day. However, the results of the matches in the top three divisions have certainly set up the closing period of the season into a very exciting one, with many permutations in terms of titles, promotion and relegation that will lead to very few irrelevant matches being played. Braintree Youth still lead Division One despite slipping to their third defeat of the season. They are level on points with Coggeshall, they have won the same number of matches but the Youth do have the better runs per wicket average. Only David Hale reached double figures, 31, as Braintree Youth were dismissed for 81 by Coggeshall Hamlet. Matthew Hart then lead the Hamlet's reply, but he had to retire with 25 with victory in sight, and with only three wickets down it meant that they gained nine points on their opponents and a still very much in the title race, just six points adrift of the top two. Coggeshall probably came away from Notley wondering how they managed to defeat lowly Sampfords. Coggeshall only had five players, and then were soon 3-2 with Ben Stephens and Darren Green dismissed. It took 37 from Carl Bragg, and 20 from Greg Stephens to take them to 79 before their fifth and final wicket fell. Sampfords must have fancied their chances of gaining their second win of the season, but Greg Stephens made sure their hopes were soon in tatters. He took 3-19 as Sampfords were bowled out for 50. Bocking moved into fourth place, fourteen points behind the leaders by defeating Kelvedon & Feering by four wickets. Kelvedon were without a few regulars and it took 25 not out from Will Shortridge to get them to 73-3. Lloyd Edwards' 27 not out, and then 23 not out from Keith Merrell, and 19 from Danny McIntyre saw them reach 75-2 with two balls to spare. Witham were defeated, maybe surprisingly, by Braintree, but even so as they are still only sixteen points behind the top two, they cannot be ruled out of the Championship race just yet. The win for Braintree, though, has far more effect at the bottom of the table, as it gives Braintree a little breathing space ahead of Kelvedon & Feering. Braintree managed to score 74-4, with Chris Leech top scoring with 24 not out, but Witham stumbled from 50-2 to just 60 all out. Their bowling attack, for once, not giving away copious amounts of extras. Earlier in the day at Notley it had been the turn of Division Two to start the action, and it was another great day for Braintree College as they crushed Three Fields by 66 runs to take all the points and move into a thirteen point lead at the top. Trevor Spalding, 28 not out, and James Garner, 25 not out, helping them close on 114-4. Three Fields then lost Neale Dakin in the opening over and never recovered. Robbie Spalding taking 3-17 as Three Fields were blown away for just 44. Shalford are still in second place, but they must be wondering how. Steve Richardson took 4-22 for Woodham Mortimer as Shalford were dismissed for 67, with Russell Dawes top scoring with 29. Somehow though, Woodham Mortimer could only get to 62-5, with Dawes stealing the bowling honours too with 3-16. Woodham Mortimer may have lost by five runs, but the five points lifted them ahead of Little Bardfield Village. Bocking Reserves defeating Little Bardfield Village by 44 runs to move level on points with Shalford, but of course, they cannot be promoted. Bocking Reserves closed their innings on 89-3 with Darrell May, 25 not out, and Rob May 28 not out. Little Bardfield Village never got going at all, and ended their reply on just 45-5, with Daryl Hymas being 23 not out. Terling moved above both Woodham Mortimer and Little Bardfield Village as they defeated Great Totham by 16 runs. Tristan Woolfenden, 42, and Peter Tompkin, 33, taking Terling to 103-5. Great Totham only had five men, but they made a decent fist of their reply which ended on 93. Peter Shortland, 30, being their top scorer. The promotion battle in Division Three is as open as ever with 14 points dividing the top five teams. The day started with Rayne on top, and with Shalford Reserves in second place, and they met each other. Shalford Reserves only had five men, but that did not stop them crushing Rayne by 56 runs, and replacing them at the top of the table. Lee Godding hitting 51 not out, and Paul Allen, 33, as they closed on 170-3. Rayne soon lost Richard Whiteside and Marc Phillips. Peter Dawson hit 47 and Alan Stevens, 23, but they could not get Rayne to any points before they were dismissed for 114. Witham Reserves moved into third place as they defeated Braintree Reserves by three wickets with one ball to spare. James Clark, 34, and Lee-Jon Theys, 36, helped Braintree Reserves to recover from a sticky start to reach 118. Witham Reserves started well enough, but then slipped from 45-0 to 57-3, but they prevented any further collapse, and made it through to 119-3 when needing 15 off the final over. Michael Glynn adding another 33 not out to his impressive first season batting total. Richard Howes also added a telling 27 not out. Helions Bumpstead kept themselves in the race with a five wicket win over Boreham. The game could have been finished quickly as Boreham soon slumped to 18-4, but Ken Greenaway hit 38 not out to 73-5 from their eleven overs. Greenaway then bowled Adam Suckling in the opening over, but that was their only success as Helions Bumpstead moved through to 76-1 with two overs to spare. Michael Claydon and Billy Moulton-Day both retiring with 27. Boreham actually slipped to the foot of the table as Kelvedon & Feering Reserves did manage to take five points from a nine run defeat to West Bergholt. Dave Applin hit 46 not out as West Bergholt reached 114-5, despite 3-20 from Miles Harvey. Kelvedon & Feering Reserves then reached 105-4 with Frank Warner top scoring with 31 not out. Umpiring correction An error has been pointed out in the Umpiring Rota for January 29th from 6.30pm at the Leisure Centre, it now says Braintree Youth, which it should, but did have Braintree who are actually playing in that match. Since writing that piece earlier, there has been some feedback from Martin Cutmore, and so as to not force Braintree Youth into five double sessions this season, the rota for March 11th will now be amended and they will not have to officiate on that date, with Braintree and Bocking taking one match each of Braintree Youth's games. Martin does apologise for what, he admits, is a rare mistake on his part. Talented 6 year old from Colchester http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MEQgciqZRQ&feature=youtu.be Charlie and Ben Stephens will be featured in a spot on Sky Sports News on Tuesday, after their You Tube video went "viral". Five teams, from two clubs, suffer points penalties. "There really should be no deductions for December, for some teams have already played their final games in 2011, and every other team will have done so by the end of today, a full 18 days before payments have to be made by." This I posted on the website prior to Christmas, yet despite this I have been informed by the Treasurer that an astonishing five teams have failed to comply with the rules, and, subsequently have suffered the statutory ten point deduction. The teams being Kelvedon & Feering (received on January 7th); Kelvedon & Feering III; Boreham; Boreham Reserves; and Boreham III. In the case of the latter three, Dave said he has received payment forms but no cheque or confirmation if paid by Internet Banking. I have since heard from Dave Shelton after he has had consultations with Boreham that all their fees may have been paid, but he did add that he will have to check bank statements, when it has been confirmed then the points will be returned. Career Records The uploading of the Individual Statistics to the end of the 2010-11 season has now been completed, and they can be viewed via the Career Records 1981-2011 link above. The lights are on After playing for some while with the lights at the Leisure Centre being barely adequate, I can now report that they are back in full working order, so no more excuses that the ball could not be seen can be used. Have we been over-charged and for just how long? Perhaps the biggest story to break in the 32 years we have been in existence is about to unfold before our eyes. It may appear that DC Leisure have made a massive error in the charges incurred upon us for our usage at Notley Sports Centre. For those who have attended AGM's in recent times will know we have been wondering why costs at that Centre have risen more than they had at the Leisure Centre, and this was one reason why we had to drop the subsidy to younger players for this season rather than increase all fees. It was then noticed that a price list suddenly appeared on the Notice Boards at Notley which showed the weekend hourly rate to be £38.20 per hour. So we are querying though Peter Perkin, League Secretary, and Dave Shelton, League Treasurer, why we are being invoiced for £49 per hour, which happens to be the weekday rate. It is possible, therefore, that we have been overcharged every month since the start of the 2010-11 season. As and when further information comes to light about this issue, be assured we shall be informing everyone. Bank reference codes Dave Shelton has sent me Internet Banking Codes for each team that should be entered when paying fees over the Internet. The inclusion of these makes it much simpler for him to know which teams have paid, and which have not. The codes are as follows, they are listed in Division order. Please make a note of your teams' reference number. Club....................Ref
No Eligibility reminder Can I also take this opportunity to remind clubs with three teams, that no player who has played in more than two first team matches can then play in a third team match. CricketStatz pictures Players can, if they so desire, have their pictures on the individual pages. I have already added one to my own Stats pages, and so has one other player. If you would like this then simply email me a jpeg (80 pixels x 80 pixels) and I shall add it. sr.isaac@btclick.com Pudding Balls, some arrive but there will be no more after this Having found and located some Playground balls for use at Notley, I can now report that half a dozen have arrived. I can also confirm now that no further balls can be supplied. Therefore, after talking to the suppliers, I have also now got supplies of the alternative balls, which even though they are from different manufacturers, are actually identical!!! Guess they are made in the same factory and just badged differently. Two Counties fixtures published The 2012 Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship fixtures have now been published and can be seen via inks on http://www.twocounties.com/news.html A plea from the bottom of my soul Can I please, once again, send out a general plea to every team charged with officiating today, to please try and make the scoresheets, legible, correct, and generally of a standard that you would wish to see your own matches scored with. The first few weeks of the season have been dire, and I have still been making changes to scorecards on the following Saturday morning this week. If clubs really cannot be bothered to score matches properly when it is their turn, then maybe we should consider expelling or fining teams far more stringently.` Registration forms Most clubs have still yet to return the Registration Forms for the coming season. You can still use the form, from last season, from the link down the page, but remember that the fee is now £20 per team. It is also very important that you enter your affiliation to whichever local Cricket Board you are affiliated to. This is because the Essex Cricket Board are threatening to withdraw our Champions participation in the County Finals unless all clubs are affiliated. Oddly enough, our Champions, Coggeshall, are one club that has yet to renew for 2011. To access the Registration form click here Common faults Over the last few weeks some decisions made by officials, and even some comments I have heard from players on the balcony have emphasised that there is almost wholesale ignorance of the Rules, laws, and playing conditions of our League. The most common being the following 1 Leg side wides – Any delivery that will have passed down the leg side of the batsman, in his normal stance, should be called a "wide", if any more deliveries are subsequent in the same over, then they shall be called "no ball". Also can I remind Umpires that any ball pitching off the mat in front of the wicket, shall be called "No ball". This would allow a batsman to move off the mat to strike the ball knowing that it will be called such.
Finally, I would reiterate the need for all players and potential Umpires to make themselves fully conversant with the rules via the link in the next column. I am sure that the participants in the Little Bardfield Village-Kelvedon Reserves match last Sunday had no complaints at my own officiating, with every call being loudly and distinctly being relayed to the players and the scorer. I have seen many "silent" umpires over the years, and this leads to the scorer and players often having no clue as to how many runs should be added to the score. Substitute fielders I am mildly concerned about the substitute fielder rule being openly abused, and it may well be that in the next few weeks some teams will be asked to report why the have used such fielders in the first game of the season, especially when the substitute fielder could have played, as he was not locked into any other team or club, and who had actually never played a game in the League. Opponents of teams that appear to be abusing the system, do retain the right to refuse to allow a substitute fielder, as per the laws of cricket. I also received reports of players playing in coloured clothing. Our rules clearly states, white only, and the Umpires have the power to ask that player to change and allow the match to proceed in his absence until "suitable attired". I was also a little annoyed to, once again, find play running late at the Leisure Centre, with Umpires seemingly not wishing to reduce the length of matches, or curtailing innings early, as they are entitled to within the rules. Again, another reason for the Rules to be read and clearly understood. Internet Banking We welcome teams paying their fees via Internet Banking. However, we also request that anyone wishing to use this scheme contacts Dave Shelton first. Dave's email address is further down this column. From the Treasurer Payment of Match Fees. Please ensure all Match fees are paid by the 5th of the month following the games played. The exception is the payment for March MUST include Aprils games. Over the years I have been fairly relaxed as to not issuing any points deductions, however this year, after a few problems last season the points will be deducted. Can I remind all clubs if you have to call off your match for whatever reasons, unless the call off is due to the centre having to juggle fixtures, which Steve will inform us all, then the Payment is the FULL amount of £30 PLUS the £30 for the opposition totaling £60. If clubs wish to pay directly into the account, as some clubs have done in the last few seasons then please either call me or email me davids@essexboysandgirlsclubs.org for details of the account to pay into. Leisure Centre changing rooms We have to remind some individuals that kit must not be taken on to the spectator gallery at the Leisure Centre, as it can obstruct Fire Exits. If their own rubbish bins are in the passageways, then any problems they create are their responsibility, but bags left would be our responsibility and leave us open to legal action. Changing rooms are within 20 feet of the playing area and lockers can be used for the storage of valuables. There is simply no reason why any bags should ever be taken to the gallery. Players coming to the gallery to change between innings also adds considerably to the time taken to complete the match, and the knock on effect affects all matches played subsequently. Match Fee forms for 2011-12 An updated form for the new season will be available nearer the start of the season. For a match fee form simply click here. |
